Staff Development

Effective staff development is important to every firm’s future. A simple but effective method is to develop a competency-based framework. In order to do this you need to know where your competencies are now, where you want them to be, and how you are going to bridge the gap.

Any role can be broken down into four levels: a trainee, a supervised practitioner, a practitioner and an expert. The role of electrician is used an an example here.

  • A trainee electrician would have little or no knowledge of the role requirements. They would be limited in the things they could do on their own, and would need to be fully supervised.
  • A supervised practitioner electrician would be able to undertake many aspects of the job. They would however not be able to certify their own work.
  • A practitioner electrician would be competent in all the tasks required for the role.
  • An expert electrician would be fully competent in all aspects and have extensive experience. They’d also be able to pass on their skills and experience to others by supervising and training them.
