TimelessTime Defined
The idea of timeless time has been around for a number of years now. Manuel Castells, the social scientist, wrote a trilogy about the age in which we now live called The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture (1996, 1997, 2000). He suggested that with the age of computerisation and the World Wide Web, the crisp boundaries between work and relaxation have been blurred. Managers now find themselves working outside what we once called ‘normal working hours’. Frequently it is the only way to move the organisation forward. Managers work on the train to and from work. Managers use driving time to phone to check progress on jobs. And managers check and respond to routine emails in the evening. The state is made worse for those trading in global markets across time zones and different religion-defined working weeks. Timeless time means a whole new psychological contract with staff – traditional clarities are gone. Staff give more but they expect more and your strategies and the way you deal with your staff must evolve in line with this new epoch.
