Human Resource Management (HR) Explained
HR Defined
We know it is something to do with employing people. Something to do with getting the right people into the organisation and making sure they are happy in their work. It does however go further that this: once in the organisation, people need to be motivated if they are to do their best. People are motivated by responsibility, competence and a feeling of doing something worthwhile. Managers manage. They have objectives agreed with others and they aim to lead their people to achieve great things. Sometimes working life is about the everyday. And sometimes it is extraordinary, making changes so that the organisation can provide an ever better service and exceed business plans. In an ideal world, people are motivated and managers manage. In the ideal world employees are committed to the firm and competitive advantage and higher profits result. Life is however not ideal. The manager’s job is complex with a lot to know and a lot to do. People are complex with life outside work that from time to time impinges on their committment. Things change both within peoples’ lives, within the organisation and in the world around us. Despite changes, managers must continue to motivate. They must make the changes needed to achieve objectives and they must respond to external events.
So what is HR?
It's the science of employment. HR managers are the facilitators of the employment contract. They work with managers to ensure that people are indeed committed and motivated. They work with people to solve external problems and problems in the workplace. An HR manager’s aim is a committed workforce and managers who achieve their objectives.
